  • Do not force your child to eat all the food on their plate.
  • Allow your child to decide when he or she is full. This will help your child to learn to stop eating when he or she is full.
  • Make sure your family eats breakfast. Skipping breakfast often leads to over eating later on in the day.
  • Pack baby carrots or pretzels in your child's lunchbox. Include fruit, low-fat pudding or low-fat yogurt.
  • For dinner, add vegetables to your meals.
  • Cook with less fat. You can bake, roast or poach (cook in simmering liquid ) foods instead of frying.
  • Limit the amount of sugar in your child's diet. You can offer water or low-fat milk instead of soft drinks, fruit juice drinks and sports drinks.
  • Avoid eating in front of the TV. This is a great solution for childhood obesity.
  • Do not give your child food as a reward for good behavior.
  • Do not keep food from your child for poor behavior.
  • Make sure your child gets at least one hour of moderate physical activity per day. Plan activities that the whole family can do such as skating, hiking or biking.
  • Limit your child's TV, video game, and computer time. You should decrease the amount of time your child spends watching TV to less than two hours per day.
  • Support your child as they make these changes. You will need to accept and encourage your child during this time. Your child needs support, acceptance and encouragement from you.

  • Tell him or her that they have done well when they have tried to eat healthier or become more active.
  • Sometimes it is very difficult for your child to make too many changes all at once. Try making only a few changes at a time.
