Sarah

Sarah had been fighting extra pounds and obesity for most of her life.

Her parents had been obese while she was growing up, and healthy eating was never a priority.

Her family also never really took part in any physical activities, and she was never encouraged to be on any sports teams.

It wasn’t until Sarah was in college that she really began to want to lose weight.

Having been to the doctor for a sinus infection, she noticed that he wrote “morbidly obese” on her chart.

The words were shocking to her.

She knew she was overweight and that it wasn’t healthy, but the word morbid never entered her mind.

The reality that her extra weight could actually kill her at 20 years of age was devastating.

The next semester she enrolled in a nutrition class, and also signed up for several personal training sessions at the college’s gym.

She understood the connection between calories and weight loss, but had no idea where to begin her path toward overcoming obesity.

She soon learned that she didn’t need to have a huge plan in front of her, she just needed to begin.

She started walking to her classes instead of driving or taking the campus bus.

She also began to eat more fruits and vegetables, and stopped eating dessert.

Before she knew it, the pounds began to come off.

As she lost more weight, she became even more motivated to keep it up.

She began walking further, and eventually began running.

She signed up for another nutrition class that included ideas on how to cook nutritious meals.

The pounds continued to come off.

Today Sarah is almost to her ideal weight.

She has found the last ten pounds to be the hardest to lose, but is proud of the 110 pounds that she has lost so far.

Nancy

Nancy had tried every diet plan out there.

She understood the importance of eating right and exercising, but it didn’t seem to matter what she did, the pounds didn’t come off.

If they did come off, they seemed to go right back on in a matter of months, and often she’d end up even heavier.

She’d done everything she could think of over the years, from talking to nutritionists, talking with her doctor, and meeting with trainers.

She was at the end of her rope.

She finally met with a specialist about gastric bypass surgery.

She understood it was a last resort and not a decision to be made lightly.

While many people achieve successful weight loss with the surgery, others suffer from a myriad of complications, and some even die.

After a great deal of research into the surgery, and counseling sessions offered through her doctor’s office on what to expect after the surgery, she scheduled the procedure.

It has now been six months since her surgery and Nancy is feeling great.

She’s lucky and has had no complications from the surgery.

She has lost 70 pounds so far, although the quick initial weight loss is beginning to slow down some.

She is getting used to how the surgery has dramatically changed her eating habits.

She can no longer eat a big meal, but instead must eat several small meals throughout the day.

For Nancy, this was a great choice, and she is definitely pleased to be included in personal success stories.
