What is Metabolism?
For many of you, the word metabolism is a familiar one.
But while you may recognize it, you may not understand exactly what it is and how it can affect obesity.
We’re happy to dedicate an entire section of this site to it and ways to increase it.
First, let’s begin with a definition.
Metabolism is the amount of energy needed by, and burned by, your body in order to maintain itself.
This would amount to the number of calories your body needs for it to function – for your:
- Heart to pump blood
- Lungs to process the air you breathe
- Brain to transmit messages etc.
It also refers to the way the body processes this energy:
- How it gets the nutrients it needs
- How it uses them and
- How it disposes of waste.
If you sat still all day long, your body would still need calories to maintain itself.
This is the number of calories you need to simply exist – which equates to your resting rate.
Another term that you may hear is basal rate.
Looking at metabolism at the cellular level, there are several kinds of rates.
These include aerobic and anaerobic rates.
Your metabolism is unique to you.
Factors that influence your individual rate include:
- Gender
- Age and
- Genetics; these are factors you can’t do anything about.
Other factors that you can do something about include:
- Activity level
- Thyroid function (an improperly functioning thyroid can be treated with medication)
- How and what you eat and
- How much muscle your body has.
Often when you hear about metabolism you hear people talk about having a slow or a fast rate.
If it is slow your body is slow to process the nutrients it receives. This means that if you eat 2,000 calories in a day it may slowly process these, and you may end up eventually gaining weight.
If it is fast, it may process the 2,000 calories you ate so quickly that you end up hungry and your body needs more nutrients.
People with rates that are very fast may eventually lose weight.
Being able to impact the speed of your rate may help you overcome obesity. If you have a sluggish rate it is doing nothing to help you lose the weight you want to lose so you’ll want to learn the cause of it.
If you can increase the speed at which your body’s rate works, you will be able to burn more calories, which will in turn help you drop pounds.
By following tips to increase your rate, you are increasing your chances of overcoming obesity.
To use your rate to lose weight, you’ll want to look at exercise to boost it and food that speed it up.

As you recall, the key to losing weight is to burn more calories than you consume.
By increasing your rate, and finding your weight loss metabolism, you are increasing the amount of calories your body will burn simply by maintaining itself. Exercise, on top of increasing your rate, will further increase the amount of calories your body burns.
If you continue to burn more calories than you eat, you will lose weight.
