Iron Metabolism Important to Life

Iron is essential to virtually all life forms, so the necessity for proper iron metabolism is high.

If your body has enough iron then it can fully support the functions in your body, particularly with red blood cells.

Not only is iron metabolism important with regard to your body’s absolute need for iron, it is important because your body can get too much iron, which can be dangerous.

Having too little iron in your system can result in anemia, a condition in which you end up with a reduced number of red blood cells and hemoglobin, which makes it difficult for your body to transfer life-needed oxygen to your tissues and organs.

Iron metabolism that results in too much iron in your system can result in organ dysfunction.

So how does iron metabolism relate to your desire to lose weight and overcome obesity?

When you consider that half the battle to losing weight is controlling your diet, you can see that it is important to understand how your body processes the foods that you eat.

When you want to lose weight, you need to consume (eat) fewer calories than your body burns, or needs.

The extra calories your body burns will cause it to use some of its fat stores.

On the other hand, if you eat more calories than your body needs, it will store these extra calories as fat.

When you reduce the number of calories you eat, you should think about what you’re eating.

Learning about this type of metabolism helps you understand the need for iron, so you can make sure you eat foods rich in iron, such as:

  • Meats
  • Green vegetables and
  • Soy beans.

It helps you understand that too little iron can make you slightly anemic, which will result in your feeling tired.

Even with iron being so important to your body, at any given time you likely only have three to four grams of iron in your body.

Of this, most is used for transporting oxygen and other cellular processes that affect your body’s use of oxygen.

In general, as with all essential vitamins and minerals, be sure that you are eating a healthy diet when trying to overcome obesity.

Iron is important to your health, so be sure that you get enough of it each day.
