Hyperinsulinemia, Diabetes and Obesity
What is hyperinsulinemia, and what is its connection to obesity?
It is when your pancreas is creating too much insulin and releasing it into your blood stream.
Insulin regulates the level of sugar in your blood. While it is not a disease in and of itself, it often indicates that you have an underlying health condition.
It typically does not present with any symptoms; however, it can lead to low blood sugar levels, which can make you:
- Sweaty
- Weak
- Have slurred speech or
- Seizures.
Two of the causes of hyperinsulinemia include:
- The inability of your body to properly process insulin.
- A pancreatic tumor.
If your body is not processing insulin properly, there may be several factors that are contributing to this including:
- A family history of insulin resistance.
- A lack of activity
- Obesity and
- Polycystic ovary syndrome.
This is where the connection arises between obesity and hyperinsulinemia.
Those who are obese, which often includes those who do not regularly get enough exercise, are more likely to be insulin resistant and thus more likely to have hyperinsulinemia.
It is also connected to Type 2 diabetes, which is in turn connected to obesity.
In a nutshell, if you are obese you are raising your odds for developing diabetes, and thus raising your odds that you may become insulin resistant and have hyperinsulinemia.
Avoiding obesity, or overcoming obesity, is key since obesity can lead to it.
The best way to overcome obesity is to understand why you are obese and develop a plan to beat it.
Most people who are obese are that way because they lack a balance in the calories they consume and those they expend. This means that they eat more calories than their body needs to function.
There are two primary lifestyle changes you can make to correct this balance:
- Eating a nutritionally sound diet.
- Exercising.
By eating healthier, you will end up consuming fewer calories.
Concentrate on foods that are low in fat and low in calories, yet high in nutrition.
This entails:
- Eating more vegetables and fruits
- Steering clear of highly processed foods or fatty foods.
- Watching your portion sizes.
Exercising more will also make a big difference because you will be using more calories, which will help you balance the ones you are eating.
This is particularly important if you need to lose weight, because you will need to burn more calories than you are eating.
