Using the Definition of Obesity to Determine Your Status
The definition of obesity is different for children and teens then it is for adults.
It is also different for the morbidly obese.
In this article, we will focus on the different definitions for each group of people.
We will start with childhood obesity.
Definition of Childhood Obesity:
An increase in body weight resulting from an excessive accumulation of body fat, relative to lean body mass.
Health care professionals will consider a child obese when their weight exceeds the 95th percentile for their age, gender, and height on the child height weight chart.
The definition of adult obesity has changed somewhat over the years. Let's take a look at this change.
The Old Definition:
A body weight that is more than the ideal body weight but less than 20% over the ideal body weight.
The New Definition of Obesity:
Today, health care professionals use the body mass index to determine a person's weight status.
This body mass index was turned into a calculator, and today it is called the BMI calculator.
We now define obesity as a BMI above 30.
A Breakdown of the BMI Categories:
- 18.5 or less is underweight
- 18.5 to 24.9 is normal
- 25 to 29.9 is overweight
- 30 or higher is obese.
So far we have discussed the definition of obesity and the definition of childhood obesity.
